San Antonio, Texas

We spent 10 days in San Antonio Texas during August 3-13, 2017. Monique attended a conference while Randall bided his time between work and exploring the city.

The city has a lovely 24km (15-mile) river walk situated one storey beneath street level. It winds it's way through the heart of the city and is lined by bars, shops, restaurants, nature, and public art.

Canadian Road Trip

Exactly one year ago today Monique and I left Vancouver, Canada - our home for the past seven years - loaded up our belongings in a 15ft uHaul truck and made our way across Canada toward our new home in Michigan, USA.

Monique had accepted the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences and the Department of Forestry at Michigan State University.

Over seven days we drove across five Canadian provinces before entering Michigan via Sault Ste Marie in Ontario. We documented our journey with photos; which when viewed together provide a overview of the distinct and different landscapes of each province and state.

Here's a glimpse of our 4,387 km journey dated July 31 - August 6th, 2016.

Farewell Karaoke with friendsThis was the last of many farewell celebrations with our Vancouver friends. We hit up the British Ex-Servicemen's Association on our last Friday night in town, belting out a few of our favourite tunes:
- Chris Cornell ‘You Know My Name’ sung by Randall
- The Cranberries ‘Zombie’ sung by Monique
- Guns’n’Roses ‘Patience’ sung by Tanya

Niagara Falls

Monique attended a conference in Niagara Falls, Ontario from May 6-11, 2017. Randall tagged along and spent the week exploring the waterfalls and surrounding countryside.

This included visits to the charming town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, sampling Bordeaux-style wines (southern France's Bordeaux region shares the same latitude), daily sampling French Toast with maple syrup at local diners and exploration of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, between which Niagara River flows north. It also forms part of the border between the province of Ontario in Canada and the state of New York in the United States

Niagara Falls, OntarioLet us take you on an informative tour of majestic Niagara Falls.

The following selection of photos provide a brief and informative overview of our time in and around Niagara Falls. First up - some nighttime photography of the main attraction, the falls themselves.

Hawaiian Holiday

Dreaming of sunswept beaches and infinite oceans, we visited Hawaii in August 2013. Over fourteen days we celebrated our birthdays whilst explored the islands of Big Island, Kauai and Oahu.

The following video was captured during our time on Big Island and serves as an insightful look at the island's black, green and yellow sand beaches in addition to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and active volcano Kīlauea.

Big Island, HawaiiJoin us for an insightful journey of Big Island, Hawaii.

The next video features a brief glimpse of Kauai; from our epic open door helicopter ride, splendour of Waimea Canyon to the beautiful Ke'e Beach which overlooks the Na Pali coastline. It's all quite simply breathtaking.

Open door helicopterWe flew in a Hughes 500 open door helicopter with Jack Harter Helicopters. We were seated at the front of the aircraft, next to the pilot, with wind blowing through our hair. An amazing experience - maika'i loa.

Wedding Video

Our wedding planner kindly captured some video of our wedding ceremony using Monique's camera. We're inaudible given the crashing of the ocean but it's a lovely memento of the day and CJ's beautiful music.

Details, decorations and other fancy things…

It was important to us that the items we purchased for our wedding we could keep and use again- we didn’t want throw-away decorations, or outfits that we would only wear once. We deliberately had a wedding party (well two of them!) and not a formal reception. We wanted an opportunity to “let our hair down”, catch up with friends and family and celebrate our marriage with those we hold near and dear. Our goal was informal, relaxed parties with good food and drinks and lots of time for great conversation (and some fine tunes).
